Refined sugar is a sweetener, typically extracted from sugarcane or any other plant with naturally occurring sugar, that undergoes processing for refining, which includes washing, drying, cooling, and packaging to convert them into crystals. The most common form is the table sugar that has made its way onto our kitchen shelves, a pantry staple that's been used for generations.
But it comes from plants, so why shouldn't we consume them? Thanks to all the processing, the natural sugar is stripped off of all its vitamins, minerals, proteins, and other beneficial compounds. While it adds taste to our everyday food items, our body does not derive any nutrition from refined sugar. Instead, since it gets digested quickly, our body craves more of it.
A survey conducted by CDC in 2005-06, called National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey showed that white, refined sugar is addictive and has been linked to serious conditions, including obesity, diabetes, metabolic syndrome, heart disease, and more. In fact, the WHO recommends the consumption of not more than 6 tablespoons (25 grams) of sugar every day.
So what are those of us with a sweet tooth supposed to do? Forgo all treats and have just watermelon for dessert? Watermelon is a good option, but there are more too! After a lot of denial, debates and skepticism, it is finally out in the open that going Vegan or following a strict plant-based diet is beneficial for your immune system. While turning Vegan is the choice of not consuming any animal products, be it for your wallet, bags, shoes, clothes etc.; plant-based diet mainly concerns what we eat and similarly excludes any and all animal-based products like milk, yogurt, ghee, butter, eggs, fish, meat etc. Both diets use alternative plant-based replacements for milk (Soy milk, Oat milk, Almond milk, Coconut milk), ghee (Vanaspati), butter (Cashew butter, Almond butter, Coconut butter), eggs (Pea or Soy protein, Pumpkin seeds as a rich source of protein) and so on. Some of us may already know that the leading cause of death in India, is the silent killer called cardiovascular disease (CVD), which accounts for more than 28% of the total deaths in the country. This means 1 in 4 deaths are due to CVD.
CVD, COVID… It can really feel like there is no end to this misery right? Um not yet, read on...

A Whole Food Plant Based (WFPB) can refer to a diet, a meal or even a cake. It is basically a diet that is gaining widespread recognition in the scientific community and among conscious consumers. A WFPB diet plan includes a lot of whole grains, fruits, vegetables, and legumes, moderate intake of nuts, seeds, avocados, soy (e.g., tofu) and wheat products, little or no added fats/oils (e.g., coconut, and palm fat/oil, olive oil), and most importantly the exclusion of all animal products. Animal-based products have been linked to Cancers, CVDs, Type-2 Diabetes, High BP, and also other issues such as pollution, deforestation, climate change etc. On the contrary a WFPB diet has been found to be better for cardiovascular health, prevention of diseases, maintaining overall health, and is also better for the planet.
Refined Carbohydrates or carbs are generally avoided in a WFPB diet plant. Reason being it is better for health management and staying optimally fit. Refined carbs include refined sugars and grains (eg. white rice, refined flour (maida) and white sugar). In addition, even highly processed foods are avoided. To put it bluntly, most of the junk food falls under refined carbs and processed food. “Diets high in refined carbs and sugar have also been linked to high blood pressure, heart disease, obesity, hyperactivity, mood disorders, and even suicide in teenagers.”

To conclude a Vegan diet also addresses the big issue of High Blood Pressure (BP) and the condition called Hypertension. This disease is a risk-factor even for mortality among COVID-19 patients.
